Asia Museum of Modern Art held its grand opening on Oct. 24 2013. Asia Modern was designed by Tadao Ando, governed by six experts in the field of exposed concrete, and took 500 million and six-and-a-half years to complete.
Mr. Ando revealed in his speech given at the ceremony that constructing a triangular structure like that of the museum is extremely difficult, but now he felt relieved after receiving President Ma’s compliment on the museum.

“Large-scale constructions can make a city grow bigger, but arts and culture can make a city become greater,” said Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou after visiting Asia Modern.

He believed that Asia Modern not only serves as a university museum, but also represents a landmark of the Taichung City, marking a significant milestone in the history of Taiwan.

The new three-storey, triangular-structured museum, affiliated with the existing Asia University in Taichung’s Wufeng district, is Ando’s first building in Taiwan and his first ever design for a museum located on a university campus.
