New Sage Building by Hassell

New SAgE Building

New SAgE BuildingThe proposal of HASSELL for the new SAgE (Science, Agriculture and Engineering) Building at Newcastle University in the UK, offered more than simply a collection of high quality teaching and research spaces. Our vision was to create a building that both students and academics wanted to be a part of, one that forged a strong connection with the city of Newcastle, and opened the campus up to public interaction and activity. With its ‘floating’ brick facade, our design made visual reference to Newcastle University’s original historic buildings.
New SAgE BuildingWe also opened the interior to the outside, so those inside the new SAgE building could see out, and feel more connected to the university campus as a whole. The design evoked a sense of natural progression from its traditional past to its contemporary status as one of the largest and most forward-looking faculties of its kind in Europe. Positioned on a sloping and restricted urban site, we opted to raise the building up to create split-level, ground and upper-ground floors, both open to the public.
New SAgE BuildingAn extension of the neighbouring Science Square, the ground floor would be activated by a range of public events, and would showcase the diversity of teaching, learning and research activities taking place within the school. To this end, our design also presented a range of spaces supporting formal and informal learning, conversation, social interaction and individual study. The upper three floors also offered a series of flexible spaces to support academic, administration and teaching requirements.
New SAgE BuildingSkylights and solar panels allow natural light to flood into the building through a series of voids that visually connect the interior. All floors and programs are unified by a grand ‘collegiate’ stair that also serves as a great location for interaction and chance encounters. Our design for the SAgE building delivered on the university’s vision as a civic place and presented an approach that opened up the university’s public realm to invite people in.
