Redevelopment of Citizens Theatre by Bennetts Associates

Citizens Theatre

Citizens TheatreGlasgow’s Citizens Theatre has secured a £4.9m of earmarked funding from the Heritage Lottery in support of its redevelopment, paving the way for a formal planning application to be submitted. The refurbishment of the Citizens Theatre will improve visitor, performer and staff experiences, ensuring the treasured Victorian venue remains central to culture and community in Glasgow.
Citizens TheatreThe transformation of the front-of-house spaces creates a vibrant and unique social gathering place that properly supports the breadth of work and ethos of the theatre. A dramatic series of foyer spaces will replace the theatre’s lacklustre 1970s frontage on Gorbals Street. Audiences will enter the auditorium through its iconic stone gable and upper galleries will connect with new spaces for studio theatre, rehearsal, learning and administration.
Citizens TheatreActors’ facilities, backstage areas and construction workshops will be improved through reorganisation and refurbishment, whilst public access will extend further into the building where the public can see the inner workings of the theatre and its heritage: the historic understage machinery and paint frame, the scenery and wardrobe departments. Most prominently however the theatre’s exterior will also be remodeled with the return of statues of Shakespeare, Burns and the four Muses salvaged from the original 1878 façade.
Citizens TheatreAlasdair Gordon, associate director at Bennetts Associates’ Edinburgh office, said: “The theatre’s heritage is at the centre of our design proposals, and will be revealed in new ways alongside much needed new foyer, rehearsal, education and studio spaces. All parties involved have a shared vision to create a landmark building for the community and this vital funding brings us one step closer to realising that vision.” Construction is programmed to start in 2016.
