The planning application for the new Stamford Bridge stadium was submitted by the Chelsea Football Club. The application comprises an expanded seat capacity of 60’000.

It follows a successful public consultation process, which took place in July and September this year. The planning application will now be examined by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

Jacques Herzog says: “This project is very important since it is a fantastic opportunity for our practice and also a unique addition to the stadium projects that Herzog & de Meuron has realized so far in Switzerland (Basel, St. Jakob Park), Germany (Munich, Allianz Arena), China (Beijing, National Stadium) and France (Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux).

Each of them responds to the very different sports culture and tradition of its place. Pierre and I have always admired traditional English stadiums because of their specific atmosphere and history.

Stamford Bridge has a rich history and is located at the core of a vibrant neighbourhood. Unlike an isolated stadium, it is part of the day to day life of the local community.” Source and Images Courtesy of Herzog & de Meuron.
