Joint venture partners, HASSELL + Populous have won the architectural contract for the design of Sydney’s new International Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment precinct at Darling Harbour, due for completion in 2016. Included in this precint is the new red carpet entertainment theatre designed to bring world class events to Sydney.
The theatre is connected to the International Convention Centre and will also be linked to Tumbalong Place. The theatre will have 260 car parks, 1400sqm retail space, various VIP areas and multiple foyers with views of Sydney’s CBD over Tumbalong Park.
It will have a capacity for 8,000 people within an innovative fan-shaped bowl, with further capacity on the flat floor, drawing the audience closer to the performer for a more intimate experience. This fits with the latest evolution in arena design, moving towards staged performance events and offering patrons a unique and engaging experience. The re-emergence of the live music industry has dramatically changed the way we access and take part in major events.
The impact of social media, entertainment on demand and smart technology have also had a major effect and as the nature of entertainment shifts all over the world, the physical buildings which house these events have also had to change to suit both the new event and the new audience. Understanding these new venues and designing them to be adaptable and flexible is key to the future success and viability of arenas for operators, performers and spectators alike.
Unlocking the potential to create arenas which can be configured to suit the desired atmosphere of the artist is key to designing the next generation arena. As well as concerts, the theatre will also be used for sporting events and mega conferences. The innovative design will reduce the footprint of the building – allowing for an expansion of open space in the precint. Source by Populous.
