Education Minister Rob Stokes has announced a new world-class high-rise school in the heart of Surry Hills will tower 11 storeys high and boast 47 traditional classrooms, which will provide students with 1,200 new places,to be built on the site of the existing Cleveland Street Intensive English High School.
Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp was announced as the head design consultant and architect following a design competition run by the Department of Education, in consultation with the Department of Planning & Environment and the City of Sydney.
The school’s turn-of-the-century brick buildings will form the backbone of the design, supporting adjoining buildings of up to 11 storeys containing three science labs, a food technology unit, a visual arts unit and a performing arts and design and technology workshops.
The original building will house an amphitheatre, a staff hub and a media and performing arts learning site, with “clouds of future dreams and imagination” above, containing a garden deck, a student community hub, an energy centre and an ‘elevated paddock’ on the rooftop.
The plans also include a gymnasium and movement studio, an outdoor game court and a central resource library with mini-libraries throughout the school. The comprehensive new high school school, located on the corner of Cleveland and Chalmers streets in Surry Hills, will be for Year 7-12 students and is expected to open in 2020.
