The new building will take shape in Highfield campus, the largest of all 6 University of Southampton UK campuses, with more than 50 buildings. The buildings on campus have a clear orthogonal orientation with only few exceptions and the proposal will try to assimilate these directions and adapt to the campus.

The project will also try to activate the entire north-east area of the campus by unifying the public functions and by proposing a museum at the same time with the urban improvement of this area. Regarding the volume concept, starting from these 2 orientations founded in the campus, the volume received a cut here by marking the entrance and by making use of the street perspective.

The volume will be divided in 3 parts for structural reasons regarding its length. The building is raised from the ground in the idea of not being a barrier and trying to be linked with its surroundings. This gesture is transmitted to the top due to the need of having some common spaces on the highest levels. The volume receives 3 light courts so all the spaces will have natural light and ventilation and they will also have some other functions.

This building will be an amphitheatre and the volume will be extracted from the main building. They will be connected on the underground level. Also, it will help underlining this direction going to the public function, museum of architecture, in idea to activate this unused green area, an area surrounded by the back of these buildings. I also create this secondary street to support this idea. The concept is not to just simply build a new school, but to create a laboratory for architecture.

A raw structure in which students develop, experiment, test, cooperate – and come up with new interesting proposals for the future . The building will facilitate experimentation and knowledge sharing between teachers, researchers, administrative staff and students. The idea to have an open plan with no vertical structural elements that might be an obstacle. The building will offer distinctive spaces, spaces that are open to interpretation and which can be transformed if needed.

There will be a need for a shared space at the heart of the building, a space that could receive various functions, and which could also be used for mobility. The building will contain spatial sequences that can be developed over time with different programmes and needs. The new building wants to engage in dialogue with its surroundings so Exhibitions and projects can be located on the ground level. The school will be a high-ceilinged building in which functions and operations will form a synthesis.

The building will create spaces that will allow people to accommodate diversity and adapt rapidly to new professional challenges. The school of architecture is characterised by good opportunities for students, research communities and staff members to mix in an unrestrained manner around the central workshop facilities. The layout is planned such that there are spaces that are ‘open to interpretation’, that can be transformed as needed.

The project emerges as an informal academic laboratory and a pragmatic workshop building; an open ‘tool box’ for tomorrow’s architectural education in Southampton. The building’s interior is characterised by a discerning interaction between general and specific spaces in a way that can make the school scalable. The structure can make the building adapt easily to possible changes to the education.

The facades follows the main concept characterised by the PLIABLE frames, studios and open workshops. They are like a canvas of varying transparency that reflects the internal organisation. Basically, the exterior expression of the building will not present an appearance of formality , polish or exclusivity. The purpose of the design has been to obtain a framework of flexibile interior spaces that can be change over time and with the possibility to expand the areas of the building with temporary spaces.

It will have a dregree of energy sustainability with active solar control photovoltaics on the roof. It receives natural ventilation in all spaces from the light court. Also the light court will share natural light in all spaces. Other ventilation systems can be mounted on the interior of the court light. Source by Patrascu Cristian Emanuel.
