The 120,000 square foot 7-story building, developed by Est4te Four with Colonnade Group, preserves the original industrial features, incorporating elements with modern aspects of hot rolled steel, steel ‘warehouse’ glazing, concrete, wood flooring, and gallery level finishes throughout.

The project consisted of the conversion of the top 4 stories of the existing building into a major photographic and moving image studio complex.

The unassuming original façade of the building, consisting of yellow bricks and small horizontal windows has been transformed by the insertion of a massive window in steel and glass, opening the studio spaces to the amazing view of the open plaza located at the exit of the Holland Tunnel.

The extremely large staircase, connecting the sixth floor to the lounge area above and the roof terrace on top was inspired by surrealistic Escher drawings. The staircase was fabricated in Italy by Da Vinci and shipped to the US in pieces, where it was installed and welded in place.

The result is a sculptural blackened steel structure, where the raising steps are also mirrored underneath. Other design elements of the project consists of blackened steel insertions, industrial steel ‘warehouse’ glazing, exposed concrete, large plank Danish wood flooring, and gallery level finishes throughout.

The venue has already hosted several fashion events including Francisco Costa’s 10-year anniversary, a Calvin Klein runway show and after party, the Phillip Lim for Target launch, Gap’s spring 2014 presentation, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalists Celebration and the God’s Love We Deliver Golden Heart Awards.  AA Studio worked in collaboration with MA Architects.
