Woods Bagot’s design of the largest off-campus accommodation in Australia, Buranda, for Singaporean Wee Hur Holdings Ltd, will see 1,608 beds come online in 2017. Since approval, the project has gone from strength to strength. The new student accommodation development at the former Buranda TOD site, in southern Brisbane, was one of six development applications approved by Council since February, significantly boosting the amount of available student accommodation within a four kilometre inner-city radius.

Woods Bagot has expanded on the urban design strategy outlined in the Preliminary Approved Masterplan DA to create a liveable home and a high quality catalyst development for international and local students. Stage one of the development will feature 1,608 student accommodation rooms, seven commercial tenancies for shops and restaurants on the ground level, 804 bicycle spaces, 402 parking spaces and an expansive student common area at the podium level. For Woods Bagot, the vision was to create a campus environment conducive to the development of the user experience.

The new Buranda Student Accommodation development is located immediately adjacent to both Buranda Rail Station and Buranda Busway Station and is well located to serve three major universities and adjacent medical & research precincts. Woods Bagot Brisbane Principal Mark Damant said the proximity to arterial transport presented a major opportunity to reinvigorate the built and urban quality of Buranda and the Stones Corner precinct. “The buildings celebrate Brisbane’s unique subtropical climates with generous podium communal areas and sky gardens within the towers. The proposed variety of student room types coupled with a highly activated ground retail and communal podium, establishes a new and exciting mix of uses for student communities,” he said.
