Through its curved shape the New Anton Bruckner Private University is seen as a place for music, dance and acting- even from the ouside. Like a sculpture, the organically shaped building is placed in the park, incircled by 365 bright vertical lamellae who create associations with music and seem to merge the building with the sourrounding trees. A large outside staircase with seating steps allows future ouside-concerts. Inside, a light-flooded curved air-space runs like a river through the building, connecting all levels.

The flowingly, moved inner with its diverse visual relationsships and views, benefits communication and creativity. The New Anton Bruckner Private university is a 3- leveled organically shaped building with two underground levels. Teaching rooms for about 850 students and 220 teachers are locatetd on every level, plus four event halls for 600 visitors on the groundfloor. The underground car park on the first basement floor provides 131 spaces.

The University provides 100 teaching – and lecture – rooms, six ensemble-rooms and ten teaching-halls for Acting, Dance Arts and Elementary Music Pedagogy. The four Eventhalls include a big Concert Hall, an Organ and Chamber Music Hall, a studio for productions form the genres Drama and Dance Arts and a studio for Computermusic and Electronically Emplified Music. Moreover, the building contains 45 offices, a public Café/Restauramt and a 800m2 comprehensive library.

The Building´s length and width are 140 meters and 40 meters, the height varies between 15 and 18 meters. The University is built to passive–house standard, which means hight insulating values for all parts and components, combined with controlled ventilation. Our aim was to create am building expressing its musical inner life. Because of the curved shape, you will recognize the new Bruckner University als a place for Music, Dance and Acting- even from the outside. Like a sculpture or a soundBody, der organically shaped building is placed in the park. Lying in the curve of the Hagenstrasse, it opens towards nature.

The inclined walls symbolize dance and movement. For shading, the building is incircled by 365 bright vertical lamellae who also give ease and a special, musical touch to the building. Wrapped in this lamellar dress or light curtain, the sculptural building seems to merge with the sourrounding trees. The serial arrangement of the lamellae create associations with music and musical instruments, underlined by the rising shape of the building ´s height.

A large outside terrace and staircase with seating steps allows future uns for ouside-concerts. Passive-house standard war required right from the beginning. To minimize the surface-to volume-ratio, we created a very compact shape for the building. Our „ river“ – the huge light-flooded curved glazed air-space – runs through the building and ensures best natural light ing. Outdoor areas with staircase, fountain, restaurant and furnished islands of calm invite you to linger and enjoy nature.

The musical gesture of the building´s shape and the lamellae facade is coninuing inside. Fluid, curved and light-flooded spatial sequences facilitate orientation and focus on the main fascinating views – Pöstlingberg, Park and Inner City. The inner openess with ist diverse visual relationsships benefits communication and creativity. Simple materials, round lamps and sourrounding curved absorbing parapets underline the structure´s inner shape.

Acoustics have been a great matter to us right from the beginning. Form and function really follow each other. Due to the organic form of the building, you nearly don´t find any orthogonal room –which is a great acoustic benefit, because in this way the dreaded flutter echos – caused by parallel walls – are eliminated. The acoustically sensitive concert halls are sourrounded by the huge air-space of the foyer. Regarding the interior furnishing, a holistic way of thinking both room acoustis and design was a special concern of us.

We continued the metaphor of the light curtain of the lamellae fassade in ever new variations also in the inside – from the individually adjustable acoustically effective curtais of the teaching rooms to the corrugated wall panelling of the concert halls, which we invented as a solidifierd curtain – a hand made gypsum stucco work. Acoustically this developement serves not only als a bass absorber, but also as a diffuser – spreading sound waves evenly throughout the room. Finally our „wave“ has been economically even more favorable than conventional acoustic systems.

“Realising this complex design was incredibly exiting and also challenging. In addition to the spacial complexity, the technical challenge was to reconcile acoustic requirements with those of the passive-house standard. For the creation of something special and despite the tight budget, all project participants let themselves be carried away and were even allowing new developments like the lamellae fassade and the corrugated wall panelling of the concert halls. Due to this good cooperation, we could realise the complex builing with all its high requirements in such a beautiful quality and even remain below budget” says Susanne Seyfert by Architekturbüro 1.
