One Crown Place, a 246-apartment mixed-use scheme on the edge of the City of London by AlloyMtd Group and appointed development manager CBRE, has unveiled a first look at the landscape designs for the residents’ private amenity terrace and public courtyard within the development by leading urban design practice LDA Design.
LDA Design was commissioned to create communal outdoor spaces at the development, where ‘old-meets-new’ and combines two striking Georgian townhouses with low-rise Georgian townhouses, straddling the modern City of London and South Shoreditch. LDA Design’s overall vision was to create a space that promoted environmental wellness and appealed to all the senses by bringing a robust planting palette layered with texture and colour, water and wildlife into the cityscape.
The seventh level of One Crown Place will provide residents with a world-class suite of amenities, including a gymnasium, a private dining room, residential lounge, cinema room, treatment room and studio, and the communal terrace is an extension of this. On one side of the terrace is a folly with three raised planters and a box hedge framed by a steel trellis carpeted in jasmine, inspired by the follies and mazes of the traditional English landscape garden.
The desire for a sense of escape and tranquillity is catered to with a water feature which also has a tactile quality as residents can sit alongside it and cool down their hands and feet. The sense of smell is fed by the olfactory delights of jasmine, lavender and further aromatic planting around the terrace. These private niches provide serene places to sit and admire the views, and offer places for children to explore and play among the network of paths.
A sense of taste is satiated in the residents’ private dining room that opens up to the terrace. LDA Design has also designed the courtyard for residents’ and public use, which is entered at street level through the gap between the Georgian terrace and the modern residential tower. At the centre of the courtyard is a lone pin oak, surrounding it is paving whose spiral design echoes the lines of the building’s architecture by award-winning architectural firm KPF and draws you into the courtyard.
Located in London’s historic Sun Street conservation area, One Crown Place will also deliver a boutique hotel based within the fully restored Georgian townhouses, 140,000 sq ft of premium office space and retail units totalling 7,000 sq ft. Public spaces and apartments at One Crown Place have been designed by renowned UK-based interior firms Bowler James Brindley and Sophie Ashby’s Studio Ashby.
