Mälarterrassen, a new public building and the last key element of the redevelopment of Slussen at Södermalmstorg in central Stockholm, has been launched by Roger Mogert, Culture Minister of the City of Stockholm, Torleif Falk, Stockholm City Architect, and Spencer de Grey, Head of Design, Foster + Partners. Situated on a quayside site overlooking Lake Mälaren and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gamla stan, the new building will provide a rich mix of uses over three levels, creating a new destination for locals and visiting tourists, and is expected to be completed in 2025.
The building nestles into the quayside wall of Lake Mälaren, with a series of public terraces orientated specifically to frame the panoramic views of Lake Mälaren, Saltsjön and the old town opposite. Public escalators and lifts provide 24-hour access from the plaza level to the quayside and the historic route towards Gamla stan, while allowing natural daylight through to the external spaces facing north.
Spencer de Grey added, “Mälarterrassen will be a new destination for Stockholm, with markets, cafés and restaurants, linked by pedestrian routes directly to Gamla stan. In addition, this permeable and lively new city quarter will also be a spectacular new venue for performance and art.” The proposals have been developed following extensive public consultation with the City of Stockholm, with intelligent building facades that adapt to summer and winter conditions.
