West Attica Headquarters by LandmArch

West Attica

The aim of the proposal is the design of a contemporary, functional and bio climatic public building which accommodates the Region of West Attica Headquarters, in Elefsina. The new complex upgrades the urban landscape of the area while reflecting its multi-dimensional history. The circular structure of the building corresponds to the gradual transition from more public areas to more private ones, as we move from the perimeter towards the center of the circle.

The lack of open, green spaces in the surrounding area, dictates the need to introduce a new, high – quality open public space which will be accessible to all the residents. The project aims to achieve the highest possible autonomy in terms of energy consumption. With the addition of the green roof, Building – Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) on the south facade of the building and various other techniques the bio climatic performance of the building is secured.

The use of semi – transparent materials between the working spaces provides abundant light and sufficient ventilation for the interior spaces. The use of materials and construction methods which are applied correspond to the need for high energy – efficiency and low maintenance. The choice of concrete as the main building material, reflects the industrial character of the region’s urban landscape. The building, while being located on an important urban node, within a network of other significant public spaces in the city of Elefsina, becomes its new landmark.

The site is accessible from all sides and the outdoor spaces are used exclusively from pedestrians. The working spaces on the ground floor communicate directly with the existing round forest in the heart of the building complex. This forest is connected to the rest of the landscape and to the circular skate plaza which marks the entrance to the site, through an open wide corridor. The ramp element connects the green roof of the building to the rest of the landscape.

On the green roof, there are footpaths and several points of observation which offer panoramic views of the surrounding area to the visitors. The existing vegetation is preserved as much as possible, mainly in the circular forest and in the perimeter of the site. The main construction materials are concrete, glass and metal. The structure of the building consists of cylindrical concrete walls, which adopt the vocabulary of Elefsina’s industrial landscape.

The various departments are divided through opaque panels, while the individual offices are divided through transparent panels of characteristic color, according to the department they belong to. The building is equipped with a double facade, whose exterior layer consists either from concrete (north orientation) or from glass with Building – Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) towards the south. Parts of this double facade are protected from the sun by rotating vertical elements, depending on the orientation and the season or time of the day. Source by LandmArch.
