Copenhagen Business School (CBS) is the 2nd largest business school in Europe with 20.000 students, located in Frederiksberg, close to the very heart of Copenhagen. In cooperation with The City of Frederiksberg, CBS has launched a bold vision to transform the existing campus to become one of the world’s best city campuses.
At the core of the project is the intertwining of city and campus life, and the C.F. Møller master plan puts forth a holistic model for how to interweave urban spaces, open and inviting buildings and pathways on the one hand with teaching, research and study environments on the other. The long and narrow CBS campus site spans between two stops of the Copenhagen metro line and is run through by the “Rambla”, a central pedestrian path.
By creating four new urban spaces along the Rambla, ranging from the classical plaza around the metro stations to an informal, recreational park at the center of the campus, and densifying with new extroverted buildings, the master plan boosts cohesion between CBS and society. Running parallel with the Rambla, the southern cycle super highway and a new northern bicycle path connect the campus to the city’s network of bicycle.
A network of paths for ensure a safe and efficient flow through the area. New buildings are designed to cover a small land area to allow as much space as possible for urban spaces and urban life. Clusters of compact, multi-functional buildings with green roof areas create versatile spaces and are flexibly appointed so that their interiors and design expression can be changed.
The project has a strong focus on sustainability and uses DGNB criteria (Green Building Council Denmark) as a tool to meet CBS’ environmental and financial objectives. Goals for social sustainability are equally ambitious: Clearly defined meeting places, green elements and the merging of traffic lines unite Frederiksberg and the CBS campus to attract a wide variety of user groups.
