LAVA, Schlaich Bergermann Partner and Latz + Partner have won first prize in an international competition for the design for Heidelberg’s new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Neckar River. The project continues LAVA’s efforts to make infrastructure of high public value contributing both to liveability and sustainability.
The minimalist design is a restrained bridge, coming from along the eastern edge over the tops of the trees. Above the Neckar, the bridge widens to a seating landscape with balconies leading directly over the water. The ramp to the bridge, which climbs on a rampart, additionally protects the middle of the square from the street. Pedestrian and cycle paths are consistently intersection-free.

The elegant bridge design features various recreational areas above the water, and in the surrounding park area along the riverbank. The jury praised the “grand curved gesture” of the bridge. The design cleverly addresses the integration of the bridge into the cityscape, creates open and green spaces along the bridge, accessible entrances and exits, whilst at the same time fulfilling the goal of a comfortable, fast and safe route.
It contributes to the reduction of car traffic and provides pedestrian promenades to increase the quality of living. Commissioned by the City of Heidelberg and the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Heidelberg, an international competition saw 14 groups in the first stage and five groups in the second stage.
