Working closely with Gehry Partners, Tara Bernerd & Partners has been appointed to work with Equinox Hotels on the interior architecture and design on their second hotel project, situated opposite Gehry’s Concert Hall on Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles.
In addition to 300 guest rooms and suites, the team will create the design for all public areas, including the restaurants, bars and pool terrace overlooking the Hollywood hills. Many of the interior design elements for the project draw upon the organic form of the landmark that will house them and the energy of the surrounding architectural landscape.

A large public plaza, meanwhile, will accommodate a series of landscaped open terraces. A pair of deconstructed, multi-faceted towers rise on either side of a central retail corridor. The project’s three above-ground podium levels front the Disney Hall and are shown brimming with retail and restaurant establishments in renderings. These spaces feature broad, open-air shopping terraces and a central courtyard designed with seating areas and a sculptural awning.
This development, known as The Grand, is adjacent to the Civic Center and key cultural institutions including The Museum of Contemporary Art, The Colborn School of Music and Walt Disney Concert Hall. Equinox Hotel Los Angeles is currently expected to open in the first quarter of 2022. Frank Gehry’s architectural practice Gehry Partners has collaborated with developer VEL Development to create a scheme integrating more than 176,000 sq ft.
