Spring 2020 will see the inauguration of La Samaritaine at its exceptional location on the banks of the Seine, in the heart of the 1st arrondissement of Paris. Following a renovation project that was extraordinary in both scope and complexity, La Samaritaine will unveil a resolutely contemporary neighborhood that engages with the multiple facets of Parisian life.

Completed in 1607, the structure is decorated with a statue of “la Samaritaine”, the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s Well in St. John’s Gospel. Restored several times, and rebuilt in 1772, the pump house and its statue are dismantled in 1813, to be replaced by a floating public swimming pool complex. Ernest Cognacq opens a shop in Rue du Pont-Neuf, and calls it La Samaritaine. The shop’s revenues top one million francs in 1875.

Ernest Cognacq gradually acquires property in the northern section of a block bordered by Rue de la Monnaie, Rue Baillet, Rue de l’Arbre-Sec and Rue des Prêtres-Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois, and converts the existing buildings into retail space. On the southern side of the block, he commissions architect Frantz Jourdain to design and construct a building with a riveted steel frame supporting a huge glass roof, decorated in the Art Nouveau style.

La Samaritaine will once again be an animated place synonymous with sharing, discovery and memorable experiences for both Parisians and visitors from France and other countries. They will come to stay in the world’s most beautiful city center hotel, to revel in the spirit of Paris, to enjoy the atmosphere and heritage of an iconic department store, or to live or work in an exceptional setting. As the owner of this landmark building, the LVMH Group, through its Maisons, will operate the site. Maison Cheval Blanc has been selected for the hotel and DFS, the world’s leading luxury travel retailer, will operate the department store, which has become La Samaritaine Paris Pont-Neuf.

The vast renovation project – representing an investment of 750 million euros – ensures the long-term preservation of a remarkable architectural heritage, creating a prime commercial location and a thriving multi-use urban site. This project has called on the best talents and an active partnership with the city of Paris to conceive a sustainable future for the site, including the 2,400 direct employment, and strengthen the attractiveness of the center of the French capital.
