Loop
A slender white ribbon, the loop infinitely extends into the sky and to the sea. Visitors first climb 277 steps while turning backwards towards the island, rest on the peak while being exposed to the sky, then descend another 277 steps while facing the sea. The pier ends open, without a railing, strongly focussing toward the horizon.
To preserve a pure experience, the loop is devoid of any program.
Pods
The pods are scattered around the shores of the island, encouraging visitors to wander. Some are hidden, some are obvious. All are prefabricated concrete spheres with simple openings that focus attention on particular elements of the environment of Fehmarn. Responding to this, the spheres rest on pole foundations and can be easily removed.
The equinox pod is halved along it’s east west axis. Whenever the sun crosses east or west the pod will be filled with light, with no shadow cast. It is accessible from the southernmost tip of the island.
The opening of the water pod is submerged and glazed, exposing the murkiness of the baltic sea. It is accessible from the islands marina.The frame pod has a horizontal opening framing the horizon, and a vertical opening framing the Church Tower in Burg.
It is accessible via the western shore. The fire pod is cut open at the equator and open to the sky. In it’s center is a fire pit which visitors can sit around, shielded from the wind.. It is accessible via the promenade.
The nest pod is a perforated solid, placed in the shallow sea south of the island. The openings offer nesting places for migrating birds. It is not accessible. Source by Julian Breinersdorfer Architekten.
