Southwark Council has appointed Avanti Architects to draw up new plans for the Walworth Town Hall and Newington Library buildings. Following the devastating fire in March 2013, Southwark Council agreed a vision to rebuild as a new, world-class civic centre for Walworth and the whole borough. The new building will include an enhanced space for Newington Library, space to display the Cuming Collection and items from the Southwark collection, a flexible space that can be used for a range of activities such as civic events, entertainment performances, exhibitions and registrar facilities with space for wedding ceremonies.

Key to Avanti’s competition winning proposal was the creation of a strong relationship with a new public square that will allow large numbers of users to gain access into the heart of this major public building without significant alteration to the external appearance of the historic façade. Avanti will be working with Faithful + Gould to develop proposals and a full consultation process will begin later this year.

Avanti beat stiff competition from Rick Mather Architects, Purcell, John McAslan + Partners, Haworth Tompkins and Donald Insall Associates. Of the three shortlisted design proposals taken to public consultation in late 2014 Avanti’s scheme proved the most popular.  Cllr Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transport, said: “Our vision for Walworth Town Hall and Newington Library is to offer local residents a new, top quality space to act as a community hub for people to enjoy and use at the heart of the Elephant and Castle.”

Amir Ramezani, director of Avanti Architects said: “We are delighted to be appointed to transform Walworth Town Hall into a new revitalised cultural venue and look forward to working with the community to create a civic hub they can take pride in.” The practice is also shortlisted for the restoration of
