Galal Mahmoud, founder of GM Architects, a Beirut based architectural firm, is proud to be involved in the design of the scenography for ‘HeartLand’, an exhibtion taking place at the Beiruit Exhibition Centre until November 29. Curated by Joanna Abou Sleiman Chevalier, ‘HeartLand’ will draw on the artists’ nostalgia for their homeland.

The exhibition will showcase a variety of works by students from the University of ALBA (Lebanese Academy of Fine-Art), which will illustrate each artists own experiences and present the complexity of the country itself through mediums such as sound, painting, photography and film.

Galal Mahmoud in collaboration with the students of the University of ALBA, will create the ‘womb’, a matrix through which visitors will have the feeling of entering the belly of the Earth.

This setting will accentuate the relationship between the artists and their motherland. The exhibition will have a particular poignancy for scenographer Galal Mahmoud.

With an international career spanning over 20 years, Galal left Paris and returned to Lebanon in 1996, with the ambition to start a new architectural firm in Lebanon’s emerging market.

Inundated with work, Galal made a name for himself in Lebanon’s architectural field with projects such as the Crown Plaza Hotel in West Beirut and three landmark restaurant designs: Circus, Noodle and AJA.

His latest projects include a renovation of the distinguished hotel, Le Bristol, which opened on the eve of its 65th anniversary and the Museum of Civilizations, a project first presented by Galal Mahmoud at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2014, that brought together all of the cultural aspects in Beirut’s history.
