The redevelopment of Scarborough is set to transform the area into one of Australia’s best beachfront destinations and is expected to attract hundreds of millions in private investment. Scarborough’s revitalisation will draw on its unique identity and create a contemporary, vibrant beach destination that is a hub of activity with restaurants, cafés, shops, entertainment and a range of events and activities for people of all ages, day and night. In addition to a number of foreshore improvements, the Scarborough Master Plan encourages a more flexible planning framework to facilitate investment and increase densities in key areas.

The Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA) predicts that over 2,500 new dwellings and 26,000 sqm of commercial space could be generated on private land within the redevelopment area. The centerpiece of the Master Plan is four new foreshore destinations which support visitor attraction and destination development: Sunset Hill – featuring a modern, intergenerational park with skating elements, anchored by retail and an iconic green hill that provides direct access to the beach. Scarborough Square – a sheltered ‘town square’ in the heart of the redevelopment surrounded by future cafes, restaurants and shops, and hosting a range of activities including markets, performances and food trucks.

Clock Tower – creating a friendly and engaging welcome to the beachfront, it will provide a visual and physical gateway to Scarborough and connections with key activity hubs. Beach Hub – the existing surf club building will be replaced with a new multi-use venue which will house the Scarboro Surf Lifesaving Club, a flagship bar/restaurant and the City of Stirling’s beach services facilities.  Located adjacent to the City’s pool, the Beach Hub precinct will also include all-season play facilities, alfresco dining and public open spaces.

Other foreshore improvements include:   Improved landscaping, seating, shade structures, BBQs and restroom facilities. Decked walkways, pedestrian promenades and beach lookouts. Work is underway to establish a planning framework for the 100ha redevelopment area, including a Scarborough Redevelopment Scheme, Design Guidelines and Planning Policies. Subject to finalising the detailed design and with the necessary planning and development approvals, the MRA expects major foreshore works to commence in autumn 2016.
