On the occasion of the commemoration of 120 years since the foundation of Borovets, the oldest mountain resort in Bulgaria, the Municipality of Samokov and its partners – the Chamber of Architects in Bulgaria, the Union of Architects in Bulgaria and the Union of Urbanists in Bulgaria -announce an international architectural competition for conceptual design of the territory “The Golden Triangle” for new central part of the resort.
The competition is held in support of the Vision of Samokov Municipality for the development of Borovets as an innovative, sustainable and attractive European leader in year-round family mountain tourism and sports, as well as its popularisation on a regional and international scale.
The aim is to establish Borovets as a green resort, aimed at an increasing number of visitors – nature and mountains enthusiasts as well as lovers of extreme activities such as mountain running, climbing, cycling and freestyle in the summer, free ride in winter. Samokov Municipality hopes that the successful project will contribute to a better understanding of the local culture, sports and nature by providing a higher quality of life to both visitors and local residents.
The Golden Triangle
The area is located in the most lively and attractive part of the resort, next to the finish line of the ski runs and the initial stations of the cabin and chairlift as well as to some of the largest and most important hotel complexes. The location of the area determines the importance of this space for the operation of the resort and for the overall architectural and aesthetic formation.
Specific scope themes are those of the border territories, the natural environment and habitats, as well as the immovable cultural heritage on the territory of the competition. The renovation of the Golden Triangle territory allows intervention in some existing topics of the modern built environment on the territory, which currently include functional, aesthetic, financial and image.
Related problems as well as solving existing communication problems related mainly to the pedestrian access to key sites within the territory and their surroundings, highlighting and providing access to the two cultural and historical heritage sites, basic maintenance of the existing vegetation and other activities, presented in detail in the competition program.
Schedule
The schedule of the competition is as follows:
– JANUARY 10, 2018, 17:30 (GMT +2) – project submissions deadline
– JANUARY – FEBRUARY 2018 – judging and ranking, awarded participants and awarded projects and winner
– FEBRUARY – APRIL 2018 – negotiating with the winner, choosing subcontractors for the other mandatory parts of the investment project, starting the preparation of the procedure under the Public Procurement Act for the realization of the competition project and drafting a detailed project.
Awards and Assignment
The competition intends to award a total of five prizes to the projects ranked by the jury as follows:
I place – BGN 20,000 (about 10,220 euro) and the right to negotiate directly the working development phase of the investment project without an additional procedure
II place – BGN 12,000 (about 6130 euro)
III place – BGN 8,000 (about 4090 euro)
Two cash prizes of BGN 5,000 (about 2550 euro) for projects awarded by the jury.

The jury consists of leading professionals and experts in the field of architecture, urban and landscape planning, as well as the preservation of cultural heritage: Rita Justesen, Director of Planning & Architecture at CPH City and Port Development, Denmark; Pavel Yanchev, architect at Art & Build, Brussels, Belgium; Marius Mowe, co-founder of Atelier Oslo, Norway; Yordanka Kandulkova, Assoc. Professor in Cultural Heritage; Vania Serafimova, Managing Partner at Atelier Serafimov Studio, Nadejda Klincheva-Koleva, Chief architect of the Municipality of Samokov; Angelina Vangelova, Lawyer and Secretary of the Municipality of Samokov.
