The $344 million Sydney Modern designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architects SANAA, will see a significant expansion of the floor space in the current gallery.
The proposed project will include the repurposing of former WWII naval oil tanks, as well as the creation of an outdoor public art garden providing access between Woolloomooloo and the CBD. NSW Minister for the Arts, Don Harwin said the plans which go on public exhibition today show the blueprint for what will be one of the world’s great art museums.
Key features will include no artificial light directed into the night sky, rainwater harvesting, solar roof panels, minimal car-parking and low-energy air-conditioning. Construction will begin in 2019 with the project to be completed in time for the gallery’s 150th anniversary in 2021. Source and images Courtesy of Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA.
