Winners of the 3rd edition of Living Places – Simon Architecture Prize

The winning projects of the third edition of Living Places – Simon Architecture Prize were revealed in a digital event. The international prize received 165 projects as submissions, including the delivery of 140 videos that the jury studied to determine the 10 finalists.

In the Collective Places category, the award went to Can Sau. Emergency Scenery, in Olot (Spain), a project by the studio unparelld’arquitectes, with a video by Martí Pellicer and unparelld’arquitectes (Eduard Callís and Guillem Moliner). The jury said: “This is a project with a unique and memorable approach to regenerating old parts of the city, an example of how a single project can add a lot of value to the urban space.”

The studio MESURA has won the prize in the Personal Places category with Casa Ter, in the area of Baix Empordà (Spain), with a video by Ricard López. The members of the jury had this to say about the project: “A very beautiful, subtle and delicate project that conveys a true sense of harmony with nature and the surrounding landscape.”

For this edition, the jury has decided to exceptionally grant a Special Mention to the film “To become one”, directed by Romain Loiseau and Tristan Soreau on the Institute for Molecular Sciences’ project in Orsay (France) by Kaan Architecten + Fres Architectes. The jury explained the reason for their decision: “In an effort to defend how much cinema can contribute to the representation and knowledge of architecture, far from being just a communication and promotion tool.”

The winners were announced at a public event, live through Simon’s YouTube channel, with the participation of the winning teams of this edition of Living Places, Eduard Callís and Guillem Moliner (unparelld’arquitectes) and Benjamín Iborra (MESURA), who had a conversation with the president of the jury, Anupama Kundoo.

The international jury for this edition was formed by: Anupama Kundoo, an Indian architect internationally, who served as president; Louise Lemoine, a video artist; Víctor Jaime, a Mexican architect, one of the winners of Living Places in 2018; Ana Luisa Soares, a young Portuguese architect; Dean Skira, a Croatian-born lighting designer, and finally Salvi Plaja, an industrial designer and design director at Simon.
