The European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design recently announced that Robbert Jan van der Veen, MSc., partner at ECHO Urban Design was selected as one of the most promising and emerging design talents in Europe for 2020 and will therefore receive the 40under40® Architecture and Design Award.

The 40under40® Architecture and Design Award is presented annually to the most promising designers under forty years of age in Europe and is intended to support and promote emerging designers across Europe. In addition to the Rotterdam urban architect Van der Veen, the list of names of the 2020 edition also includes Julius Taminiau and Ant Vervoort.

Urban innovator Van der Veen is very pleased: “The 40under40 Award® is a great token of appreciation. Not just for me personally, but especially for the ECHO Urban Design team. Urban design, after all, is anything but a one-man job. From our studio in Rotterdam we work with 20 professionals on urban areas with high quality of life every day, designing living environments that resonate. We see densification as an opportunity to create more space with design.”

He continues: “The layered and interwoven city of the future can only become a reality when nature and landscape are given space and grand gestures merge into an environment that has a familiar identity, a sense of neighbourhood and security.” The winning projects will be showcased in Athens in November 2021 at the “40 Young European Architects with New Visions” exhibition.
