Aarhus gets Denmark’s first light rail, which is planned to be inaugurated in mid-2017. The agreement concerns bicycle shelters, windbreaks, bicycle stands, bollards, benches and pump stations, which are all designed especially for the light rail and the city by C.F. Møller Design.

The equipment is designed to match the design idiom from the light rail’s design concept, while the overall aesthetic expression is cohesive and homogeneous in the urban space. The new concept is also based on the design concept for the light rail stations’ fixtures, with one continuous spine carried by individual columns.

The grounds for choosing C.F. Møller and Veksø’s design proposal emphasise that: “Veksø A/S and C.F. Møller Design have thus designed an entire series of new products for the city, and every element of the design series is elegant in its expression, with a strong identity and with highly convincing consistency between the individual products”.

Flemming W. Skall comments on the choice of C.F. Møller: “We chose to work with C.F. Møller Design due to their unique understanding of the production process and their delivery of a sharp, simple, Nordic design that is in good harmony with the rest of the light rail’s design. When you look at the two designs together, you can clearly see the recurring aspects.”

Jon Brøcker, head C.F. Møller Design describes the solution: “At an early stage, we decided to continue to work with the broad, slim column that can be viewed as a diagrammatic, simplified metaphor of the light rail. We use the column as the robust, structural base for all of the series’ elements, and tension arises when we combine the column’s robust gravity with the transparent brackets that lend character to the series, and also serve various practical purposes.” Source and images, Courtesy of C.F.
